A Letter to my Teenage Self
“Make the choice to accept yourself just as you are today for a better tomorrow.”
Hey there li’l sista,
Minus the acne and the boobs not growing, don’t fret.
The world awaits you in all your glory.
But today I find myself undoing a lot of thought patterns I developed at your age.
So do me a favor and watch that little voice in your head,
The one that says:
Your hair is not long enough
That your face is not pretty enough
That the people in the room don’t like you
Because that voice in your head slowly turns into something horrible
She becomes louder and more critical…
And from little whisperings about your looks
She’ll convince you you’re not worthy
And that from not looking good enough, nothing you do is good enough
That abusive relationship you re in is the best you’ll ever get
That money is all you’ll ever make
That life you dream of is just a dream
So every time she creeps in,
Here’s what you do
Tell her – “You know what, I’m great just the way I am”
Gently acknowledge her and choose to feed a new voice, a better voice, a stronger voice
A voice that sees your strengths rather than your ‘weaknesses’
Your talents and gifts rather than your ‘flaws’
Your lessons learned rather than your ‘mistakes’
So hey there li’l sista
Make the choice to accept yourself just as you are today
For a better tomorrow.
Love,
The older you.
